PSA for all the incoming college firstyears: The Freshman 15 is a MYTH
The term was invented in 1989 by Seventeen Magazine and misrepresented what was a very small and incomplete study to begin with.
A recent study with a large sample size and more complete research techniques found that the freshman 15 is a media myth. It is normal to continue to gain weight during your college years as you continue developing into an adult. College students show a nearly identical weight pattern over the years 18-22 as non-college students who are the same age. Efforts targeted at “preventing the freshman 15” and fear caused by media coverage of the “freshman 15” may encourage the development of disordered eating.
